Right after Thanksgiving, it feels like December – and the Christmas season – just sneak right up! No worries.

The typical day to bring the elf back is December 1st. However, the elf can come earlier or later, depending on whatever works for your family. Elves are, after all, magical enough to make anything happen!

So, it’s totally fine if you want your elf to come on Halloween, on Thanksgiving, or even if you want him or her to stick around all year long. For most people, the first day of December is the big day for the elf debut.

If you’re wondering what age you should start elf on the shelf ideas, I would say that elf is best enjoyed by kids who are about 5 or 6 (and older). At this age, most kids will understand the concept of rules, and since one of the main elf on the shelf rules is that we can’t touch the elf, 5 or 6 is a good age to start. For younger kiddos, they can still enjoy the elf doll at Christmas, but they may be more interested in getting to play with it!

But you might be wondering, can the elf on the shelf stay after Christmas? Well, every family is different. In some homes, the elf comes back a couple times throughout the year, just to see how the kids are doing and congratulate them on their birthdays and other special times.

So, here are some ideas for your last day of elf on the shelf.

I know a lot of parents struggle with elf on the shelf especially when there are many OTHER things we’re also trying to manage during the holiday season. On social media, I hear many parents talk about how they just don’t have time to do elf stuff when they work full-time. Or that they get stressed out just hearing the phrase elf on the shelf!

I get it – so that’s why I started a free email series to bring you quick & easy elf on the shelf ideas you can do that don’t require any special props. You can do all these things with just the regular stuff you probably already have around the house.

I think doing the elf tradition should be FUN, joyful, and not be a source of stress for parents. Social media and even blogs like this can give the impression that we have to go really over the top. But that’s not true – we don’t have to make our homes look like a Macy’s Christmas window!

Think about the little things your mom, dad, grandma, teacher or whoever did for you when you were a kid that made Christmas special. Often just little things like a bowl of hersheys kisses or the neighborhood Christmas lights make December such a magic time for kids. It’s the little things that count!

So in these emails, I’ll be sending two easy elf ideas every day, focusing on the mentality that it’s the little things that make Christmas special. If you don’t want to spend extra time every day googling for elf ideas or if you just have decision fatigue and want something easy (like ME!), this email series is for you!

Candy canes are a really versatile candy because of their unique shape. There are lots of ways elves can play with them!

Candy Cane Skiis

Making skis out of candy canes for your elf is an obvious choice, because the candy canes are exactly the right size and shape to be skis for an elf!

To make the candy cane skiis:

1. Lay the elf on a flat surface and place two candy canes near it, one beside each leg.
2. Tape the candy canes on to the bottom of the leg using scotch tape (or another type of strong tape that won’t un-stick easily).
3. Bend the legs up right where you have taped them to the candy cane.

Be careful that you don’t break the candy canes! They are fragile.

Candy Cane Sled

Zoom zoom zoom, you don’t have to have snow outside to let yourself go sledding! Just need some candy canes.

A candy cane sled is a really fun and simple idea you can do for your elf. It takes about 5 minutes to throw it all together. If you’re planning ahead for your elf ideas, you can get started making the candy cane sled beforehand so it’s ready to go on the night you plan to set it out.

To make the candy cane sled, simply take 4-6 candy canes and hold them in position with one hand, on a table. Lay a piece of tape across the candy canes and press the sides of it down on the table to hold it. Then add a second piece of tape on the other end of the canes. Both these pieces will be on the straight end of the candy canes.

Next, carefully lift up the candy canes and wrap the tape around so it sticks to the back. Now your candy cane elf sled is ready to go!

Candy Cane Hunt

You can write a little note or print out the one I’ve made (it’s free!) so that your kids won’t recognize your handwriting.

-Can you find all the candy canes?

-I hid ____ candy canes around the room! Can you find them all?

If you don’t have any candy canes, no problem! Print out this image of candy canes and cut it out. It’s available in color as well as one that you can add colors to if that works better for you.

Free Candy Canes For Clean Rooms

Just place the candy canes in a glass or jar on the table and have the elf sit beside it. Make a little note (or print one out from here) that says “Free Candy Canes For Clean Rooms!”

I Love You Candy Cane Message

This one is so easy – take a piece of paper and place two candy canes on it, to make a heart shape as shown:

Then write “I” above the heart and “You” below the heart so that it reads “I Love You”. You can make one for each child if you want. For this elf idea, the elf just sits nearby!

Another way you can do this one is by just using candy canes. Write “I ︎ U”

Candy Cane Trapeze

To make a candy cane trapeze that your elf on the shelf can hang from, just tie a long bit of ribbon, yarn, or other sturdy string to each side of a candy cane. Then hang it from a hook or light on the ceiling or wall. Bend the elf so it’s arms or legs are attached to the candy cane and it will look like it’s swinging in the elf circus!

Candy Cane Mini Golf

This is another cute little candy cane idea for the elves that looks a lot fancier than it actually is.

To make the elf look like they’re mini golfing using a candy cane, first you’ll need to choose a suitable location. A bookshelf, counter or other spot where the elf can stand without getting bumped is good – make sure the elf can lean on a vertical surface such as the wall.

If you have a green piece of paper, or a piece of green felt or cloth you can use, that can help to make it look like grass. But it’s not necessary.

Then position the elf so it looks like they’re standing and holding a candy cane with the curved side down, to look like a golf club. Color a small black circle on a piece of paper and cut it out – then place it on the “golf course” to make the hole.

Lastly, use a mini marshmallow or a small ball (gumball or other small round candy perhaps) to make the golf ball.

Magic Christmas Seeds

I find this elf idea so silly and I think kids love it for how goofy it is. It’s called “Magic Christmas Seeds” and basically what we’re going to be doing is growing some candy canes! This idea takes up 2 days, so it’s double fun!

First, find something you can use as the elf’s magic Christmas seeds. Christmas sprinkles, M&M candies, peppermint candies, Christmas-colored Tic-Tacs…. use what you’ve got! Take about 5-10 of them (make sure you have an equal number of candy canes) and place the “seeds” in a small dish.

Next to the dish, you’ll put a sign that reads, “Plant these Magic Seeds in sugar, blow them plenty of kisses, and sprinkle them with love!”

Be sure that you have sugar on hand to place in a small dish with the kids’ help. Then let them plant the little magic seeds into the sugar.

For the second day, spoon out the magic seeds first, then stick an equal number of candy canes into the sugar so that it looks like they have grown their over night.

The result is fun and will surely be one that they remember!

Gift Wrap The Toilet

Okay so this is definitely the grand finale of bathroom ideas for your elf, in my opinion! It’s pretty easy to do, and it actually doesn’t take as long as what it looks like, although beware that wrapping up a toilet can be a bit no see if you’re doing it at night.

Toilet Paper Snowman

This funny elf idea was super easy to do. I took three unused rolls of toilet paper (well of course they’re going to be unused) and added some cut out black circles for the eyes, mouth, and buttons. Then I cut out a small carrot shaped piece of orange paper for the nose. I used a glue stick to adhere them to the toilet paper.

The nice thing about this one is that it doesn’t waste that much toilet paper if you use a glue stick, since the glue doesn’t pass through many layers of TP. Just be sure to apply the glue to the paper cut-outs and not the actual TP, which may not be strong enough to apply gluestick to directly.

You can also make a toilet paper elf snowman by coloring on the toilet paper with markers.

Elf Bath

Having your elf take a bath is a cute, clean idea that’s lots of fun. Kids will find it funny if the object that the elf is bathing in it’s also kind of silly. Think about what you have at home. It could be dry macaroni pasta, dry beans, or something a little bit more seasonal like tiny marshmallows, or other candies.

Elf Pooping

I don’t know about your kids, but it seems like every kid I’ve ever met has always had an obsession with poop humor! There is literally nothing funny in the kids universe of funny stuff. Then poop. So for this one all I did was crumble up a chocolate and place it in the bottom of a clear receptacle. A jar, a small picture like this one, or a glass works fine.

Elf Bandaids

Chances are you probably have a whole box of Band-Aids somewhere in your medicine cabinet. This one is super easy to do, all you need to do is pull out a bunch of Band-Aids and cover them all over yourself. This is especially a good idea to do for kids who have just gotten an owwie the day earlier.

Replace Toilet Paper With Tape

This is a super funny of Elf On The Shelf idea that you can do in the bathroom! All you need to do is remove the roll of toilet paper from the holder, and replace it with a roll of tape. And have your elf sit on the roller-holder-thingy and put a little sign in it’s hands that says “this could get sticky!”

Morning Message on the Mirror

this is a good idea that you can do even if you forgot to set up an elf idea the night before. Just take a make up pencil, or lipstick, or a dry erase marker and write a cute happy message and their children’s bathroom mirror. Then place the writing tool in the arms of the elf and have the office sitting on the counter. So easy, so fun!

Toilet Fishing

This one requires a little bit more set up, but you just need to put some Goldfish crackers into the toilet and put a pencil with a string tape to it in the elves arms to make it look like he or she is fishing into the toilet for goldfishes. If you don’t want to put the crackers right into the water, because they will puff up and dissolve over many hours, you can place saran wrap over the toilet and place the Goldfish crackers on that.

we don’t know why elves on the shelf like toilet paper, but it seems like a pretty common thing for them to get into. Perhaps it’s because everybody has toilet paper at home, and there are lots of fun and creative ways that you can use it.

Elves are playful little creatures indeed. This idea is super simple, you just need to have some chairs that you can move around and a sheet that you can put over the top to make a cute little fort.

if you have a printer that has a scanner top, you can easily do this elf shenanigan. I don’t know if I would personally do a full color skin print it out, but even black and white would look pretty funny.

Everybody knows that else favorite foods are candies – so it only makes sense that an elf where do use marshmallows as a barbell. You can make your elf do a little bench press using two marshmallows and a toothpick.

Toilet Paper Snowman

To make a toilet paper snowman for your elf to present, you can either draw the features on with markers or cut them out with paper and glue them on with a glue stick. In this example, I used colored paper glued on. You can even include a little message that says “Do You Want To Build A Snowman?” if your kids are into Frozen!

Then you can either stick the elf’s legs inside the top of the snowman, as I did above, or stick the top part of the snowman onto the elf’s hat, so it looks like the elf is dressed up as a snowman, as shown below:

Toilet Paper Sayings

Okay, there are all kinds of funny toilet paper sayings you can make your elf write on toilet paper. Use your imagination or just use the ones I’ve written here, the kids will love them! I used normal markers to write these messages. You can expect to have to tear off 3-4 layers of TP depending on how thick each individual layer is and if it’s multi-layer, etc, once you’re done with this elf antic. Just a FYI!

Toilet Paper Swing

To make the toilet paper swing, just gently tie about a 2-3 foot piece of toilet paper from a towel bar or bathroom light fixture. The toilet paper breaks easily, so be careful! Then position the elf in a sitting position on the toilet paper swing, and voila.

Toilet Paper Hammock

A toilet paper hammock for your elf is made in the same way as the swing. Just tie two ends of a strip of toilet paper to a towel rack or a light in the bathroom and position your elf doll so he or she is laying down comfortably on the hammock. I put my elf’s hands behind her head and crossed her legs so it looks like she’s really getting comfy!

Toilet Paper Trail

A roll of toilet paper makes the perfect thing to roll around in – even down the stairs! This one is easy to do – just stick the elf’s legs through the toilet paper roll and push it up to the torso of the doll. Then hold on to the loose end of the toilet paper as you let the roll (and elf) roll down the stairs.

Toilet Paper Snowflakes

If you’ve seen the movie elf, you might remember how Buddy the elf used all sorts of paper (including toilet paper) to make magnificent chains of snowflakes all over the NYC department store, “Gimbel’s.”

So it only makes sense that your Christmas elf on the shelf would want to do the same at home!

To make the toilet paper look like snowflakes, I unrolled about 2 feet of toilet paper and folded the squares like an accordion. Then I just used scissors to cut out triangles and flower-petal shapes on each side. When unfolded, it will look just like pretty handmade snowflakes.

Toilet Paper Mummy

A toilet paper mummy is a funny and silly way to make it look like the elf doll was getting up to shenanigans while everyone was asleep.

Toilet Paper Roll Tube Swing

Elves can use toilet paper tubes to do funny stuff, too! The toilet paper roll swing looks so clever but it really only took about 5 minutes start to finish. You just need an empty toilet paper roll (might want to save one ahead of time so you don’t have to dig through the bathroom trash..), a piece of string, ribbon, or gift-wrapping ribbon, and a light fixture or other good spot to make the elf swing dangle from. I placed mine over the dining room table.

Toilet Paper Message

The toilet paper message takes the elf rolling in toilet paper idea a bit further – by adding a fun message! You can use some of the funny TP sayings I wrote about earlier on this page or include a fun countdown message such as “4 more days”!

Elf got hurt tripping over toys

Here’s another way you can subtly remind the kids to clean up after themselves when they’re done playing with toys. This elf is bandaged up and has a note explaining that she fell down trying to walk across a floor covered in toys.

Elf Tripped On Toys

These elves got hurt so badly from tripping on toys that they had to pull out the whole first aid kit!

No entry until you have tidied your room!

These elves have completely blocked off the living room with red Christmas ribbons – until the kids have cleaned up their rooms.

Elf On Strike

This elf has signs saying that he’s on strike until the rooms are clean. Very cute and bound to be effective, the kids will definitely want to see their elf up and doing fun things agin soon.

Now this one is clever! Noelle the elf is stuck in her box. Surely that’ll get the kids to clean their rooms!
