An elf on the shelf ziplining using a candy cane

Elf On The Shelf Zipline

an elf on the shelf doll gliding across an elf zipline over the christmas tree.

This elf zipline idea looks so fancy and will surely impress the kids! But believe me, it is SO unbelievably easy. It took me less than 5 minutes to get this one set up!

In order to do the elf zipline, you’ll need a bendable elf on the shelf, some heavy string, ribbon, or twine, and a candy cane. If you have a non-bendy elf that you want to make poseable, read my quick tutorial on how to make your elf on the shelf bendy!

OR, if you don’t have time to alter your elf, but his or her hands are sewn together, you can go with that!

How To Make The Zipline

So for this trick all I did was first tie the string from one banister to another in the railing of our house. We have a 2-story foyer with a winding staircase, and I’ve got the Christmas tree right in the center of it, so I thought this would be the perfect spot to have our mischievous elf doing a little ziplining!

They’re sure to notice this one!

Getting the elf to hold on

I decided to use a candy can to have my elf hold on to something while ziplining across the room.

So, I bent the elf’s hands around the two ends of the candy cane. I made sure they were very well gripped onto the candy cane so we don’t have any elf accidents!

If you want to be extra sure, you could also use some double-stick tape.

Some people also use regular scotch tape and just wrap it around the elf’s hands and candy cane. You can’t see it easily from the ground. It works!

Once I was sure I had a good grip, I slid the candy cane out of elf’s hands, looped it to the string, and put elf’s hands back on the cane, again making sure that the grip is very secure.

My kids absolutely LOVED this one!

One thing I will mention is that if kids can reach the string, they might try to wiggle it. Be warned and happy elfing!
